Aachen Passover Haggadah
Tel Aviv, Israel : Rosenfeld Gallery, 2004
Zoya Cherkassky is a Ukrainian born Israeli artist. She began crafting this most unusual illuminated Haggadah during her stay in Aachen, Germany, as a part of the exchange program between Germany and Israel in 2001. She deliberately introduced the elements of anti-Semitic symbolism in her Haggadah, thus addressing prejudiced perceptions of the Jews throughout the centuries. In the image, the swollen red feet of the Wandering Jew are pictured standing on the ground, with golden shining squares of matsah underneath. The influence of the early 20th avant-garde artists El Lissitzky and Kasimir Malevich is clearly visible here.
