Hagadah shel Pesaḥ (1923)
Hagadah shel Pesaḥ.
Berlin : Ferdinand Osṭerṭag, 683 [1923].
Jacob Steinhardt’s Haggadah is one of the most exquisite renderings of the Passover text in the 20th century. While still drawing from the traditional iconography and technique of the early Haggadot, the artist shifts the drama of the events to the entirely new level, introducing the elements of German expressionism in his art. Featured here is the woodcut illustrating passage through the Red Sea, with Moses in the foreground.
