Sarah Orne Jewett (1849–1909)
American author Sarah Orne Jewett’s best-known book is The Country of the Pointed Firs, a collection of narrative sketches about her home state of Maine. The decorative publisher’s binding was designed by her friend Sarah Wyman Whitman, the first woman artist to be regularly employed by publisher Houghton Mifflin and one of the most prolific designers of her day.
