James Baldwin, "Previous Condition"
James Baldwin published his first short story—a study of a young Black actor’s search for identity in 1940s America—in the American Jewish Committee’s Commentary magazine in October 1948 at the age of twenty-four. Five years later, he would publish his debut novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain.
