Agreement with Margaret Gregory
November 1, 1921
Robert Gregory became legal owner of Coole when he turned 21 in 1902, but he never challenged his mother’s continuance as mistress of the estate. In return, she took over the principal care of his and Margaret’s three children. After his death in 1918, she maintained an uneasy coexistence with Margaret, who had inherited all of Robert’s property. In May 1921, Margaret was the sole survivor of a tennis party ambushed by the IRA—being spared because she was a Gregory. With war still raging in Ireland, she resolved to sell Coole. Determined to save it for her grandchildren, Lady Gregory made a formal agreement with Margaret to take over the running costs if she could remain there.
