Annie Horniman and The Abbey
Abbey Theatre broadside
Dublin, 1921
A 10 PM curfew imposed in Dublin during the War of Independence severely reduced evening audiences at the Abbey and by March, out of money, the Theatre had to close. Abbey actors organized a benefit matinee in London, with this advertising flyer for it prominently crediting Annie Horniman, whose financial subsidies had been crucial to the Theatre's start and early years. Long resentful of Horniman's dictatorial manner during that time, Gregory was infuriated by the flyer and burned her copies: "Miss Horniman made the building, not the Theatre, and we bought it from her when she stopped her help. The Theatre—the Irish National Theatre—was in existence before her—we did not 'take it over' from her." The benefit was successful, and the Abbey reopened.
