Frontispiece from Callot Revived
Martin Engelbrecht? (German, 1684–1756), Augsburg: 1715, Etching
Appearing just five years before the bubble, Callot Revived manifests renewed interest in the French seventeenth-century printmaker Jacques Callot, who inspired not only the volume’s name but also its subject matter—and whose imagery The Great Mirror of Folly mined for many of its illustrations. Following Callot’s example, Callot Revived features assorted stock characters with diminutive dimensions performing a range of satirical roles. In turn, The Great Mirror of Folly refashions Callot Revived’s protagonists as a cast of swindled investors, foolish dupes, and accomplished con artists.
