A Monument Dedicated to Posterity in Commemoration of the Incredible Folly Transacted in the Year 1720 (Second Edition)
Bernard Picart (French, 1673–1733), 1720, Etching and engravings
In the updated version, Picart added poisonous mushrooms to mark the infestation of bubble companies in Holland, which was home for the ex-pat French artist. On the image’s left side, a sinister courtship scene unfolds between a weeping woman, ruing her financial losses, and a predatory suitor, who tempts her with British banknotes and South Sea Company shares.
