The Rubbers Bros. Comics
The Rubbers Bros Comics was a safe-sex series that ran for six volumes. Its two main characters, the anthropomorphic condoms Fred and Gene, embark on a journey replete with metaphors, moral lessons, and related characters, such as a doctor and a police officer. The comic uses interactive games such as word searching to encourage its readers to think about words like “AIDS,” “latex,” “virus,” and "lubed.” The editors also worked on other AIDS prevention projects, together and individually, including the publications When AIDS Strikes and the AIDS World Newsletter.
Dedication to spreading trustworthy and holistic safe-sex information without shame or judgment has always been essential for the LGBTQ+ community, which suffered greatly during the AIDS epidemic. Stigma led to self-censorship within and among LGBTQ+ communities in dealing with the dangers of the epidemic. Misconceptions surrounding HIV/AIDS persist today, and providing scientifically correct information to the public, including teenagers and children, can be lifesaving.
