Kay Tobin (1930–2021)
"Nancy Tucker and partner in Butch-Femme t-shirts"
Gelatin silver print, 1970
Kay Tobin Lahusen was one of the first photojournalists in the United States whose work highlighted lesbian and gay subjects. Lahusen was an amateur photographer who began taking photos for the lesbian journal The Ladder in the 1960s. She later worked for the newspaper Gay in the 1970s and other publications. In this photo she captures a lesbian couple playing with butch and femme roles at the first Pride march on Christopher Street Liberation Day in 1970. This photograph looks forward to the work she did throughout the 1970s documenting intimacy in lesbian couples.
