Ter-Arutunian’s snow scene for the 1964 production is much more sparse and austere than Horace Armistead’s 1954 designs, but it creates the perfect combination of the intimidation and beauty necessary to frame Mary’s journey with the Nutcracker Prince to Candy Land.
