This photograph of Robert Gregory in uniform was taken by the Irish-born George Charles Beresford. After studying at the Slade School of Art, Robert spent part of each year painting, and his works were exhibited at the Baillie Gallery and Chenil Gallery. He enlisted in 1915 and joined the Royal Flying Corps, becoming flight commander, then squadron leader, and winning both the Legion d'Honneur from France and the Military Cross in 1917. He was credited with "ace" status, achieving multiple victories in aerial combat. His plane crashed on the Italian front on January 23, 1918, from causes unknown. He left three young children by his 1907 marriage to Margaret Parry.
