Fragment of a typed transcription of Orlando
Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
Orlando fragment of a typed transcription 1927 or later
Inscribed “Vita from Virginia Dec. 6th 1928,” Woolf presented the completed manuscript of Orlando to the novel’s muse. (Sackville-West bequeathed it to Knole, the grand stately home of the Sackville family since 1603.) This contemporary typed transcription of the manuscript records the author’s swift drafting, and simultaneous revision, of the novel. This passage and many more would be significantly altered for publication. In this instance, the poet Christina Rosetti’s possible visit is condensed and recharacterized. Other changes included more dramatic shifts in tone and alterations to make Sackville-West less recognizable.
