Edwin Denby notes in his 1954 essay More than Sweet Fantasy: the Content of Balanchine’s Nutcracker that the moving bed for the Nutcracker was Balanchine’s own theatrical invention. Anecdotally, dancer Jacques d’Amboise has recounted how his son was the operator of the bed in productions where he performed as the Cavalier, hiding under it on all fours, ready to make it move and spin as if by magic.
