In his travelogue “My Trip to the Land of Gandhi” featured in the July 1959 issue of EBONY magazine, Dr. King wrote “While the Montgomery boycott was going on, India’s Gandhi was the guiding light of our technique of nonviolent social change.” King’s travel to India was co-sponsored by Gandhi Smarak Nidhi (Gandhi Memorial Foundation) and the American Friends Service Committee, with funding from Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, the Montgomery Improvement Association, and the Christopher Reynolds Foundation. At his first press conference in India, King said “To other countries I may go as a tourist, but to India I come as a pilgrim.”
