Throughout the year, Teen Curators explored the core concepts of photography regarding Black persons. They built their understanding using the following texts: Viewfinders:Black Women Photographers by Jeanne Motoussamy-Ashe ; Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People by Thomas Allen Harris; Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers 1840 to the Present by Deborah Willis, “In Our Glory: Photography and Black Life” essay from Art on My Mind: Visual Politics by bell hooks and Ethnic Notions by Marlon Riggs.
Present within the processfolio are excerpts from some Teen Curators sketchbooks which showcase their notes from in-class discussions, gallery, museum and archival visits. Through implementing a photographic practice all students were given ILFORD HP5 PLUS black and white disposable cameras and instructed to document the world around them. It was a curatorial decision to showcase some of the negatives as a nod to the imagemaking praxis. Also featured are reproductions of archival documents from the Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe Manuscript and Research Collection located in the Manuscripts. Archives and Rare Book division of the Schomburg Center.
