The Judge by Rebecca West (June 1922)

Rebecca West published her novel The Judge in June 1922. Kay Boyle, in her contribution to Being Geniuses Together, said of the book: “Rebecca West’s novel I read and reread all winter . . . . All that mattered to me was that she was a woman, and that she had written a novel.” This photograph of West taken by Carl Van Vechten was shown in 1922: A Vintage Year alongside a copy of The Judge. Both the book and the photograph are inscribed by West to Van Vechten and his wife.
